Basic Dog Obedience made simple

About me

I started obedience training as I had a rescue dog that was a nightmare to take for a walk. Little dog syndrome on steroids. Blossom is no longer with me, but we spent 2 years learning together. She taught me so much. By the end of the 2 years this little dog that would try and attack anything in sight when going for a walk, didn’t matter the size of the other dog or in some cases human, was able to be in a large group of dogs and follow her obedience training. I could place her in middle of circle with up to 30 other dogs walk away and recall he back to me. It was the start of something bigger.

I now have 12 dogs at home. 6 of these being mine and the rest hubbies. I train my working Collie’s to work stock specifically sheep. Basic obedience comes into that training at a young age. You need your dog to come when its called. Stop is critical, it can potentially save your dog’s life. Then there’s the basic sit and stay. Drop or down. Up to get up into cage, back of ute, onto sheep’s back. I do some fun training when I can’t work stock. Hide and seek is a good one. Reversing. Teaching the dog to bark and more importantly stop.

I hold a cert 3 in Animal Studies and a certificate in Dog Care, Psychology and Training. 12 months experience in vet clinic. And have been training working dogs for the past 8 years.

Madra (Dog) Manners Matter

My mission is to give people the tools, training and understanding to have a healthier and happier relationship with their dogs. Dogs are happier and better behaved if they are given mental and physical stimulation from their human. If they feel safe. We have a responsibility to them, as their whole life, to be strong for them, so that they feel secure and are at their happiest.

The Difference Between Obedience And Manners

There’s an important difference between obedience commands and behavior manners.
Obedience is when your dog obeys a command you give them. You only give a correction when the dog ignores a known command (and they must know it with a level of distraction).

Manners involves behaviors that the dog does while living with and interacting with us day to day.
I have seen too frequently people allowing their dogs to get away with bad manners. These are unwanted behaviors that come up that are dangerous and need to be corrected straight away for everyone’s safety.
In these cases, you must correct straight away and get it out of the way rather than allowing the dog to practice the unwanted behavior, often making it stick.

We can use obedience to help with manners and provide alternative behaviors, but even having alternative behaviors doesn’t teach the dog that the unwanted behavior is not allowed.
For this learning to occur, the unwanted behaviour needs to have a consequence.
Which can be
• Leash correction. A leash correction the leash must be slack.
• Verbal response (dog needs to know what that means)
• Removal of self. Dogs love our attention so take yourself out of the picture.
• Time out spot
There are times in a dog’s life where you need to make then feel uncomfortable to release a behavior is not acceptable.

Dogs do not understand shades of grey. They live in a black and white world that is in the moment.

Rates

Consultation is $40 for one hour at my location. $50 per hour for me to come to you if located in Cowra. Outside area cost can vary.

Reactive dog cost adds $10 to the cost. Working with reactive dogs add’s complexity and risk.

What is a Reactive Dog

Reactive Dog is a term used for an unwanted reaction towards outside stimulation trigger, usually another dog. Can be, Bike, children, skateboard, lawn mower etc.
Reactions can be. Barking, lunging, hackles up, growling, eye bawling, loosing focus on the owner.
Reactive dogs are not necessarily aggressive dogs. Reactivity is over stimulation not aggressions. Note: Both can occur in the same dog. I DO NOT handle Aggressive Dogs.
